Black-necked Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) - HBW 1, p. 194

Other common names: Eared Grebe

Taxonomy: Podiceps nigricollis C. L. Brehm, 1831, Germany.
Specific name caspicus obsolete. Often includes P. andinus. Sometimes placed in genus Dytes. Forms superspecies with P. andinus, P. occipitalis and P. taczanowskii. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • nigricollis Brehm, 1831 - Europe to W Asia, wintering SW Palearctic; CE Asia, wintering E Asia; E Africa.
  • gurneyi (Roberts, 1919) - S Africa.
  • californicus Heermann, 1854 - SW Canada, W USA, NW & C Mexico; winters S to Guatemala.
