Other common names: Black-lored Yellow Tit, Black-spotted Tit; Indian Yellow Tit (aplonotus)
Taxonomy:
Parus xanthogenys Vigors, 1831, Simla-Almora district, Himalayas, India.
Forms a superspecies with P. spilonotus, and has in the past been considered conspecific. Races aplonotus and travancoreensis have been treated as representing one or, alternatively, two separate species; they intergrade in Western Ghats (between Konkan and Hassan), in W of range, where intermediates described as additional race, xanthonotus (female with crown varying between black and greenish, or olive-greenish with darker spots, whitish-yellow face and sides of breast and belly contrasting with well-defined bib and ventral stripe). Three subspecies recognized.

- xanthogenys Vigors, 1831 - NW & C Himalayas from N India E to E Nepal.
- aplonotus Blyth, 1847 - C India.
- travancoreensis (Whistler & Kinnear, 1932) - Western Ghats, in W peninsular India.
