Trogons (Trogonidae)
Black-headed Trogon (Trogon melanocephalus) - HBW 6, p. 113
French: Trogon à tête noire
German: Schwarzkopftrogon
Spanish: Trogón Cabecinegro
Taxonomy: Trogon melanocephala Gould, 1835, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Forms a superspecies with T. viridis, T. bairdii and T. citreolus; sometimes considered conspecific with T. citreolus. Populations of W Costa Rica described as race illaetabilis on basis of paler belly, but this character apparently not constant. Original description clearly treats species name as adjectival; hence this becomes masculine to agree with genus name. Monotypic.
Distribution: Atlantic slope of SE Mexico (including islands off Quintana Roo), N Guatemala, Belize, and N Honduras; also Pacific slope of El Salvador, and Nicaragua and N Costa Rica.
