Taxonomy: Tantalus melanocephalus Latham, 1790, India.
Forms superspecies with T. aethiopicus and T. molucca; sometimes considered race of T. aethiopicus. Monotypic.
Distribution: Breeds from Pakistan and Nepal through India to Sri Lanka; NE China; Viet Nam; Java and possibly Sumatra. Winters in S China, Burma, Thailand, Sumatra and Philippines. Formerly more widespread in E Asia.
