Taxonomy: Ardea melanocephala Anon. = Vigors and Children, 1826, no locality; ? near Lake Chad.
Forms superspecies with A. humbloti. Monotypic.
Distribution: Africa S of Sahara, from Senegal to Ethiopia and S to South Africa.
