Taxonomy: Hydrochelidon albostriata G. R. Gray, 1845, New Zealand.
Sometimes placed in Chlidonias even as race of C. hybridus, but is a typical Sterna. Species name sometimes misspelt albistriata. Monotypic.
Distribution: New Zealand, breeding in interior South I. Post-breeding visitor to North I, where formerly bred.
