Taxonomy: Bucco nigrifrons Spix, 1824, Rio Solimões, Brazil.
Forms a superspecies with M. atra and M. morphoeus. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- nigrifrons (Spix, 1824) - SE Colombia, E Ecuador, E Peru, and much of Brazil (E, N of Amazon, to R Negro and, S of Amazon, to Pará and Alagoas and S to E Mato Grosso do Sul and W São Paulo).
- canescens Todd, 1937 - E Bolivia.
