Other common names: Andean/Puna Buff-necked/Branicki's Ibis (branickii)

Taxonomy: Tantalus melanopis Gmelin, 1789, in insula novi anni = New Year's Island, near Staten Island, ex Latham.
Formerly considered race of T. caudatus, with which forms superspecies. Race branickii sometimes regarded as full species, on basis mainly of ecological differences. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • branickii Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1894 - highlands of Ecuador, Peru, NW Bolivia and extreme N Chile.
  • melanopis (Gmelin, 1789) - S Chile and S Argentina, migrating outside breeding season to N Argentina; isolated population in coastal Peru.
