Taxonomy: Poliospiza mennelli E. C. Chubb, 1908, Shangani River, Zimbabwe.
On basis of limited mitochondrial DNA analysis, this species, together with S. reichardi and S. gularis, sometimes placed in genus Poliospiza, indicating only distant relationship with other African members of present genus, but detailed consideration of all taxa in current genus is required before full generic revision can be made. Monotypic.
Distribution: W & E Angola E to SE Tanzania, S Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
