Other common names: Black capped Night heron
Taxonomy: Ardea Nycticorax Linnaeus, 1758, southern Europe.
Forms superspecies with N. caledonicus, with which known to have hybridized in Java, Sulawesi and Philippines. Races hoactli and falklandicus sometimes absorbed within nycticorax and obscurus respectively. Four subspecies usually recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- nycticorax (Linnaeus, 1758) - C and S Europe eastwards to C and S Asia, extending N to Japan and S to Timor; Africa and Madagascar.
- hoactli (Gmelin, 1789) - North, Central and South America from S Canada to N Chile and N Argentina.
- obscurus Bonaparte, 1855 - N Chile and NC Argentina S to Tierra del Fuego.
- falklandicus Hartert, 1914 - Falkland Is.
