Barbets (Capitonidae)

Black-collared Barbet (Lybius torquatus) - HBW 7, p. 193

French: Barbican à collier German: Halsband-Bartvogel Spanish: Barbudo Acollarado

Taxonomy: Bucco torquatus Dumont, 1816, Brazil; error = Cookhouse, eastern Cape Province, South Africa.
Closest relative is L. guifsobalito (with similar size, coloration, displays, sexual duet roles), but the two are not so close as to form a superspecies, though they react strongly to playback of each other’s voice. Also related, less closely, to L. rubrifacies. Race bocagei intergrades with congicus and torquatus, and both vivacens and irroratus intergrade with zombae; partly white morphs occur in at least two races (zombae, irroratus), and have been treated as races under names “albigularis” and “nampunj..
