Taxonomy: Diomedea melanophris Temminck, 1828, Cape of Good Hope.
Emended to melanophrys by Temminck in 1839, but alteration unjustified. Races may constitute two full species, as sympatry recorded without interbreeding. Two subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • melanophris Temminck, 1828 - Southern Ocean, from Cape Horn E to Antipodes Is.
  • impavida (Mathews, 1912) - Campbell I, to S of New Zealand.
