Taxonomy: Dendrocopus Falcularius Vieillot, 1822, Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Sometimes thought to form a superspecies with C. trochilirostris; regarded by some authors as conspecific, an arrangement disputed by most. Close relationship with C. procurvoides also suggested. Monotypic.
Distribution: SE Brazil from C Bahia (Chapada Diamantina) S to N Rio Grande do Sul, also adjacent E Paraguay (Alto Paraná, Itapúa) and NE Argentina (Misiones, NE Corrientes).
