Taxonomy: Pteroglossus nigrirostris Waterhouse, 1839, no locality = Subia, near La Mesa, Cundinamarca, Colombia.
Rather distinct from other Andigena species. Races intergrade where they meet. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- nigrirostris (Waterhouse, 1839) - Andes of W Venezuela and E Andean slopes in Colombia.
- occidentalis Chapman, 1915 - W Andes of Colombia.
- spilorhynchus Gould, 1858 - C Andes and W slope of E Andes in S Colombia, and E slope in Ecuador; recently collected in extreme N Peru (Cerro Chinguela).
