Barbets (Capitonidae)

Black-billed Barbet (Lybius guifsobalito) - HBW 7, p. 192

French: Barbican quifsobalito German: Purpurmasken-Bartvogel Spanish: Barbudo Guifsobalito

Taxonomy: Lybius guifsobalito Hermann, 1783, Ethiopia.
Closely related to L. torquatus (similar size, coloration, displays, sexual duet roles), but not so close as to form a superspecies with it, although each reacts strongly to playback of the other’s voice. Also related, less closely, to L. rubrifacies. Birds become smaller clinally from N to S, but insufficient for racial differentiation; populations from White Nile southwards formerly separated as race ugandae. Monotypic.

Distribution: E Sudan, Eritrea and W & C Ethiopia, S to extreme NE Zaire, C Uganda, W Kenya and CN Tanzania; range expanding in W Kenya. Recently reported from N Cameroon, so may occur in Central African Republic.
