Taxonomy: Sterna acuticauda J. E. Gray, 1832, Kanpur, India.
In past, commonly listed as S. melanogaster, but name melanogaster was preoccupied. Monotypic.
Distribution: Pakistan (R Indus), Nepal and most of India E to SW China (W Yunnan), and S through Myanmar, N Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and S Vietnam.
