Storm-petrels (Hydrobatidae)
Black-bellied Storm-petrel (Fregetta tropica) - HBW 1, p. 268
French: Océanite à ventre noir
German: Schwarzbauch Sturmschwalbe
Spanish: Paíño Ventrinegro
Other common names: Gould's/Striped Storm-petrel
Taxonomy: Thalassidroma tropica Gould, 1844, equatorial regions of Atlantic Ocean.
Sometimes lumped together with sibling F. grallaria, its N counterpart; classification of species and subspecies in genus Fregetta is tentative, especially birds at Tristan da Cunha and Gough I; race melanoleuca may be invalid or may be referable to F. grallaria. Considerable individual variation in plumage tends to obscure geographical variation; most forms described as subspecies usually ascribed to F. grallaria. Two subspecies currently accepted.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- tropica (Gould, 1844) - circumpolar, from islands of Scotia Arc through S Indian Ocean to Antipodes Is.
- melanoleuca Salvadori, 1908 - (?) Tristan da Cunha and Gough I.
