Belongs to the group that also includes M. corvina, M. chrysopogon, M. rafflesii and M. mystacophanos; probably closest to M. rafflesii, having similar size and sexual monomorphism, or possibly to M. mystacophanos. Monotypic.

Distribution: Lowland Java and Bali.
