Other common names: MacClounie’s Barbet (macclounii)

Taxonomy: Pogonias minor Cuvier, 1817, north Angola.
Related both to L. melanopterus and to the L. bidentatus group, latter including that species and the superspecies formed by L. dubius and L. rolleti. Race macclounii considered a separate species by some, but interbreeds with nominate minor over a considerable area (SW Zaire to NC Angola); form sometimes referred to as “intercedens” is hybrid between those races. Two subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • minor (Cuvier, 1817) - S Gabon to W Zaire and S to WC Angola.
  • macclounii (Shelley, 1899) - NE Angola, SC Zaire, S Burundi and W Tanzania S to N & W Zambia and NW Malawi.
