Taxonomy: Thamnophilus melanonotus P. L. Sclater, 1855, Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia.
Has historically been considered most closely related to S. canadensis on basis of morphology, but is vocally quite distinct. Monotypic.
Distribution: Caribbean slope in N Colombia (S & W to N Bolívar) and NW Venezuela (E to Miranda).
