Taxonomy: Larus Belcheri Vigors, 1829, no locality (presumably Peru).
Formerly treated as polytypic, with L. atlanticus as a subspecies. Monotypic.
Distribution: Humboldt Current area, between N Peru (Libertad) and N Chile (Tarapacá). Disperses N to N Ecuador and S to C Chile (around Valparaíso).
