Taxonomy: Cercococcyx montanus Chapin, 1928, Kalongi (c. 2100 m), Butahu Valley, Ruwenzori Range, Zaire.
Forms a superspecies with C. olivinus. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- montanus Chapin, 1928 - montane forests of EC Africa from Ruwenzori to L Tanganyika.
- patulus Friedmann, 1928 - Kenya to S Zaire, Zambia, E & S Tanzania, Malawi, E Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
