Taxonomy: Perdix Barbara Bonnaterre, 1792, no locality = Morocco.
Previously placed in superspecies with A. chukar, A. philbyi and A. rufa; now considered to be more distant from the reconstituted superspecies of A. magna, A. graeca, A. chukar and A. philbyi. Proposed races theresae and duprezi included respectively in barbara and spatzi. Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- koenigi (Reichenow, 1899) - NW Morocco.
- barbara (Bonnaterre, 1792) - N Morocco and N Algeria; Sardinia (possibly introduced).
- spatzi (Reichenow, 1895) - S Morocco, C Algeria and S Tunisia.
- barbata (Reichenow, 1896) - Libya and NW Egypt.
