Taxonomy: Cuculus Sonneratii Latham, 1790, North Cachar Hills, India.
Sometimes placed in monotypic genus Penthoceryx; alternatively included in Cuculus by some authors. Five subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • waiti (Stuart Baker, 1919) - Sri Lanka.
  • sonneratii (Latham, 1790) - India and Nepal through Bangladesh and Myanmar to SW China, Thailand and Indochina.
  • malayanus (Chasen & Kloss, 1931) - Peninsular Malaysia.
