Taxonomy: Alca arctica Linnaeus, 1758, northern Norway.
Recorded differences separating grabae from nominate arctica may reflect clinal variation only. Three races recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- naumanni Norton, 1901 - NE Canada (high E Arctic) and NW & E Greenland to Jan Mayen, Spitsbergen and N Novaya Zemlya.
- arctica (Linnaeus, 1758) - SE Baffin I and Hudson Bay S to Maine, and E through SW & SGreenland and Iceland to Bear I, C & N Norway, Kola Peninsula and S Novaya Zemlya.
- grabae (C. L. Brehm, 1831) - Faeroes, S Norway and SW Sweden S through British Is to Channel Is and NW France.
