Taxonomy: Noctua cuculoïdes Vigors, 1831, Simla-Almora district, Himalayas.
Possibly forms superspecies with G. castanopterum. Sometimes considered to include latter and G. castanonotum as races. Eight subspecies recognized.

  • austerum Ripley, 1948 - E Sikkim, Bhutan, NE Assam and NW Myanmar.
  • rufescens Stuart Baker, 1926 - NE India, Bangladesh and N Myanmar.
