Arabian Bustard (Ardeotis arabs) - HBW 3, p. 263

Other common names: Sudan/Great Arabian Bustard

Taxonomy: Otis arabs Linnaeus, 1758, Yemen.
In past, genus frequently labelled Choriotis, but Ardeotis has priority; genus sometimes merged with Otis. Present species forms superspecies with A. kori. All four Ardeotis have occasionally been placed in same superspecies. Four subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • lynesi (Bannerman, 1930) - W Morocco (probably extinct).
  • stieberi (Neumann, 1907) - SW Mauritania and Senegambia E to NE Sudan.
  • butleri (Bannerman, 1930) - S Sudan; single record in NW Kenya.
  • arabs (Linnaeus, 1758) - Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti and NW Somalia; SW Saudi Arabia and W Yemen.
