Taxonomy: Larus serranus Tschudi, 1844, Jauja Valley, Junín, Peru.
Monotypic.
Distribution: Andean lakes, from N Ecuador to N Chile, W Bolivia and N Argentina (Tucumán). In winter extends to Pacific coast, S to SC Chile (Aisén).
