Taxonomy: Fulica ardesiaca Tschudi, 1843, Lake Junín, Peru.
Chestnut- and white-fronted birds formerly treated as separate species, F. americana peruviana and F. ardesiaca, and later lumped as F. americana ardesiaca. Forms superspecies with F. cristata, F. atra, F. alai, F. americana, F. caribaea and F. leucoptera. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • atrura Fjeldså, 1983 - S Colombia, Ecuador and coastal Peru.
  • ardesiaca Tschudi, 1843 - interior Peru, C & W Bolivia, N Chile and NW Argentina.
