Taxonomy: [Pipra] peruviana Latham, 1790, Chanchamayo, Junín, Peru.
Sometimes isolated with R. rupicola in a separate family, Rupicolidae. Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- sanguinolentus Gould, 1859 - W Andes of Colombia and NW Ecuador.
- aequatorialis Taczanowski, 1889 - Andes of W Venezuela (NW Barinas, Táchira), C & E Andes of Colombia, and E slope in Ecuador and Peru (S to Amazonas and N San Martín).
- peruvianus (Latham, 1790) - C Peru (S San Martín S to Junín).
- saturatus Cabanis & Heine, 1859 - SE Peru and W Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
