Taxonomy:
Alca antiqua Gmelin, 1789, Bering Sea.
Racial subdivision recently revived, and requires additional examination. Two subspecies provisionally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- antiquus (Gmelin, 1789) - Yellow Sea and Sea of Japan (Peter the Great Bay) N through Sakhalin, Kuril Is and N Sea of Okhotsk (Talan I) to Kamchatka, then E through Aleutians to S Alaska (St Lazaria I, Forrester I, Kodiak I, Semidi Is, Shumigan Is, Sandman Reefs), and then S to Queen Charlotte Is.
