Ibises and Spoonbills (Threskiornithidae)

American White Ibis (Eudocimus albus) - HBW 1, p. 500

French: Ibis blanc German: Schneesichler Spanish: Corocoro Blanco
Other common names: White Ibis

Taxonomy: Scolopax alba Linnaeus, 1758, America = Carolina ex Catesby.
Forms superspecies with E. ruber; recent proposal to merge them into single species, on basis of close morphological and ecological similiraties and relatively frequent natural hybridization in zone of overlap in Venezuela, where over 40 mixed pairs recorded; another view is that they may simply be colour morphs. Monotypic.

Distribution: Baja California E to N Carolina and S through Mexico, C America and Greater Antilles to Colombia, NW Venezuela, W Ecuador and extreme NW Peru.
