Taxonomy: Anas obscura rubripes Brewster, 1902, Lake Umbagog, New Hampshire shore.
Forms superspecies with A. platyrhynchos, A. melleri and A. undulata. Sometimes considered a subspecies of A. platyrhynchos, with which frequently interbreeds in the wild. Monotypic.
Distribution: E Canada from Manitoba to Newfoundland, S to E USA as far S as North Carolina.
