Taxonomy: Bradyornis [sic] microrhyncha Reichenow, 1887, Irangi (= Kondoa Irangi) district, Tanzania.
Genus often merged with Melaenornis. Morphologically distinctive race pumilus has been regarded as a separate species, sometimes with neumanni as a race. Five subspecies recognized.
