Temminck's Tragopan (Tragopan temminckii) sound recording
3 calls made whilst standing and about to roost. The Chinese name for this bird is "Baby crying" and this call clearly indicates why. It is often provoked by warning calls from another species; in these clips, the 1st by a blackbird, the 2nd by a game pheasant and the 3rd by a Himalayan monal. A similar call is often given from the perch early in the morning, so can be used for census of potential breeding males. It is only usually given before and early in the breeding season. Hens do not give this call. The call increases in intensity and ends with a wing whirr, as can be heard. It is often preceded by lappet being distended, although the "horns" are never raised.

In the field, playbacks at dawn and dusk can provoke this call, but playbacks of warning calls from other species can be equally effective. There is a video clip of this call filmed under infrared light.
