Very difficult to separate from the two Bristle-Tyrants (Marble-Faced and Venezuelan) that also occur in Venezuelan coastal mountains. Slaty-capped has a long bill, the eye-brow is broken by the eye and the black ear patch is diffuse, not refined. This one is the most common of these three.
