Being one of the three main Guano producing bird species the Guanay cormorant is protected in Peru. Nevertheless the total population of Guano-birds (Peruvian Booby, Guanay cormorant and Pelican) has been shrinking in 95 % within the last 60 years because of the Peruvian industrial fishmeal fisheries, which reduces the birds’ main food resource: pelagic fish. This bird can be observed on Nature Expeditions’ marine coastal birding, dolphin and whale watching tours: www.nature-expeditions-peru.com
