California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus) photo
Condor with wing tag number 216 (yellow tag with the number 16 with 2 dots below number). I could tell that it is an adolescent female bird because the neck is still black and the eyes are red.
Condor is standing on piece of concrete with the San Fernando Valley in the background.
Photo was taken from my car window on Forest Service route 3N17 at Contractor Point near fire camp 9. Fire camp 9 was once a Nike missile site. This is on a mountain directly above Sylmar where the I-5, 405, and 210 freeways merge.
I often see condors in this area as there usually is a strong up slope breeze that they like fly in. On one trip I counted 16 condors hanging out and riding the wind currents. This mountain is also very popular with hang gliders and you often see the hang gliders and the condors riding the same thermals. On weekends a volunteer from Hopper Mountain will often come up there with his tracking yagi antenna to chase the condors off of the road because they will try to approach people and will not move when you drive right next to them.
