The male bird is part of a pair, but the female is more elusive. The bird is in breeding plumage and takes his turns at the feeder. The species seems more circumspect than the Evening Grosbeaks who are very aggressive with other birds at the feeding station. The plumage at the head and neck is ruffled by a late afternoon breeze.
