These birds are separated from the much commoner East and South African Grey Crowned Crane by their darker neck & body plumage, small neck wattles and by having the bare facial patch split into a dark pink lower half and an upper white half (-as in ssp pavonina; ssp ceciliae has at least 2/3rds of the facial patch showing pink).
