Old World Warblers (Sylviidae) - HBW 11
Sedge Warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus)
French: Phragmite des joncs
German: Schilfrohrsänger
Spanish: Carricerín Común
Other common names: European Sedge Warbler
Taxonomy: Motacilla Schoenobaenus Linnaeus, 1758, southern Sweden.
Recent study based on mitochondrial DNA sequences suggests that this species and A. melanopogon, A. paludicola and A. bistrigiceps form a monophyletic clade, the “striped reed-warbler group”, in which traditionally A. sorghophilus also included. Size increases clinally from SW to NE; in Norway, N populations ecologically distinct from S ones. Monotypic.
Distribution: Breeds Europe (except S & SW) E to W Siberia (E to R Yenisey), Turkey, Caucasus and N Kazakhstan; non-breeding sub-Saharan Africa.
