Rogitama Hummingbird
More exciting news from the enigmatic hummingbird found in Colombia:
A few weeks ago in the Rogitama Nature Reserve, established in 1982 by Roberto Chavarro and his family who are well-known conservationists of Colombian biodiversity, a new hummingbird was found – number 18 for the reserve. The first observations, by Roberto and the ranger of the reserve, Jesús Pachón, and then immediately by several ornithologists who visited the site, including Diego Calderón, Laura Agudelo, Andrea Fonseca, Oswaldo Cortés, Pablo Rodríguez and Jurgen Beckerns, showed that they could be facing a major scientific discovery, as maybe it was the Bogotá Sunangel, known from a single specimen obtained in 1910, or a species or subspecies entirely new to science. You can see here the official press release in Spanish and English published by the owner of the reserve and detailing the work being carried out, and even including helpful information for those interested in visiting Rogitama in the future. The mystery has not yet been resolved, but the good news is that a few days ago a specimen was momentarily mist-netted and blood samples were obtained. With these, they will be able to study the DNA of these birds and determine with certainty what they are. For now, enjoy the photos of these birds taken by Mauricio Rueda and the videos recorded by Oswaldo Cortés.
