Antioquia Wren photos

Diego Calderon uploaded two photos of the recently discovered Antioquia Wren (Thryophilus sernai). This species inhabits only the Cañón del Cauca, where its original habitat of dry shrub and forest still exists. This is a narrow canyon in the Cauca valley, where there are still some patches of natural vegetation. The area is located only about 40 minutes away from the second biggest city in Colombia, Medellín. However, it had remained undiscovered to science until now. The area will be affected, unfortunately, by dam construction which is threatening the future of this endemic species. It is therefore one of the few species in the world exclusive of the Antioquia region, like the Chestnut-capped Piha or the Urrao Antpitta.
