Almost 80% covered!

The IBC is very close to reaching an incredible mark: 80% of the world's species with material!
Since December, the IBC has been growing very quickly, especially thanks to the programme that we launched to help cover new species. Just to give an idea of the impact of this campaign, the number of species with photos has gone from less than 3000 to more than 6000 just in four weeks. Thanks to this programme there is a higher number of new collaborators that have begun contributing with very good materials! Another positive effect of the programme is that many of our good contributors that had already been contributing in a completely altruistic way, have been stimulated by this to dig up old material, many times very valuable, thus increasing their collaboration and the amount of interesting materials on the IBC!

On the downside, it seems that a number of contributors are more interested in obtaining points rather than in the quality of the materials they are posting. This has been a negative side-effect of the campaign and we are trying to reduce it to a minimum. Since the IBC is a not-for-profit project, there is only one person who is doing the work of checking the huge amount of material posted daily. She is clearly behind despite her best efforts, but indeed will go through all of the materials. In any case and with all sincerity, we think that weighing the pros and cons and given that it is a closed campaign that ends in May, the large rise in the percentage of coverage of species and the resulting increase in the number of visitors to the site have produced a positive balance.

Keep up your contributions!
