• Tiny to rather large passerines, highly variable, most with short and rounded wings, usually relatively long tail often graduated, generally rather robust but not very deep bill, sturdy legs; plumage widely variable, many species rather plain and some dull brown, others strikingly patterned in contasting and/or bright colours.
• Asia and Africa; one species in western North America.
• Forest, forest edge, scrub and grassland, from desert fringes to deep rainforest.
• 84 genera, 309 species, 872 taxa.
• 26 species threatened; none extinct since 1600.
